The Full Package: Leadership, Craftsmanship, and Execution

The teams that produce the most long-term innovation and value are the ones where these three characteristics - Leadership, Craftsmanship, and Execution of their output are balanced and in alignment.

It is possible to do good short-term work when one of these characteristics is missing or lagging. For example, you can execute well and get good short-term results while throwing craftsmanship out of the window, although that typically leads to a very serious team and technology stability issues in the longer term. You can have great transient craftsmanship and execution without strong leadership because the group is extraordinary, although circumstances like this are never supportable over the more drawn out term. Also, if you have extraordinary leadership and craftsmanship, you may wind up having a transformative individual encounter building something truly cool, but without execution, you are most likely toasted when your reserve of cash runs out.

Leadership

Leadership is a process that guides, influences and directs the behavior and work of others towards the accomplishment of specific goals in a given situation. A manager can induce the subordinates to work with zeal and confidence.

Leadership is the capacity to advise others to seek defined objectives enthusiastically. It is the human factor that binds a group together and encourages it towards goals.” - Keith Davis

That is, you make it a reality. To make it a reality, you assemble it, you exhibit it, you, in the long run, offer it to clients or have individuals use it.

Valuing a balance of leadership, craftsmanship, and execution, and trying to focus on all three in the presence of your regularly scheduled daily circus is hard.
